How To Change And Replace Power Tubes Vox Ac30 Amp Repair El84 Tube Replacement i have 2 channels which i switch back and forth between using a select box foot pedal: "normal" which is my clean channel, and "top boost" which is my dirty overdrive channel. i would like to replace some of the tubes and need some advice. other than these 2, you won't find el84 tubes in many other places. the el84 tubes were found in radios first, and then guitar amps. thanks to the el84 tube, vox's guitar tube amps have never gone out of style. There is one brand in particular who built a successful product line thanks to the el84 tube, and that's vox. make sure it is unplugged and do not touch the capacitors. Warning: be careful while working inside a tube amplifier. i would concur if they said four tubes, they are probably referring to the el 84s. You do not need to replace all the tubes at the same time the life cycle of the pre amp tubes far exceeds that of the power tubes (4 el 84s for the ac30). The components are cheap (lots of plastic parts). Trem/reverb are cheap (small reverb tank) and not tube driven. Drive sounds are the best feature, but the cleans are decent too.

In fact, the most sought after vintage Vox Top Boosts from the 60's never had that preamp valve. I mean, it's cool and gives you some extra girth to the typical Vox drive tones, but it's not a dealmaker/breaker for me.

The EF86 channel on the handwired series is overrated, IMHO. But the CC still sounds like a Vox-a very good one! And the drive tones are much easier to get at reasonable volume levels. Vox changed the circuit quite a bit on the CC, eliminating all of the expensive components related to the trem/vibrato which took up a ton of space on the board. The CC is a reasonable replacement, but it doesn't have as much clean headroom. The layout is old school and funky but the clean tones on both are gorgeous. My favorite recent Vox amp is the TBX series-I have an AC15 and an AC30. No matter what you read on the interwebz, the speaker is made in England.

The components may be soldered one at a time to the board, but the amp uses a very thick PC board for the caps and resistors. I have the 15 and it's a great sounding amp, but "handwired" is a stretch. The AC30H2 is exactly like the AC15H1TV, except double the power.
